I am a teacher/administrator in a thriving Pre K-5 elementary school designed culturally around making connections. I try to be better every day. I have an intense interest in education reform... to me not a means to an end, but rather the process of continually seeking a better way to do what educators do.
My role as a teacher/leader has taken me to many different places and offered me many opportunities to look through the optimist's lens at possibilities others may not perceive. If I believe something, I'm going to see it... this is a guiding philosophical principle I follow as an educator. In my work within First Nations communities, with kids from at-risk environments, as a school counselor and now as an administrator, I have witnessed incredible displays of resiliency in kids despite the most challenging circumstances. I have formed the belief that much is possible in the realm of teaching and learning if we focus on student's strengths, whatever they may be. I don't believe in failure, only relative degrees of success.
I reflect, therefore I am... that's why I'm writing this blog. If what I have to say resonates with one teacher, parent, student, or anyone else concerned about the well-being of our young people or the state of education in general, then my effort to encourage open-thinking and perpetual education reform will be worthwhile.
Thanks for reading, and please respond honestly to what you read... I learn new things every day from those who aren't afraid to share their perspective with me. I have a lot of respect for people who, like me, just want to get on with effective and authentic, meaningful support for children and improved teaching and learning. Good, open dialog is the best way to fuel this purpose.
