It is absolutely true at a fundamental level that everyone responds well to feeling a part of a community of learning, but I'm not sure the current model reflects entirely your description of "lone individuals in a sea being herded by bureaucrats."

For sure the reclaiming environment is one that would enhance the tone of our education system when modeled authentically to create an implicit sense of belonging and purpose, and I say enhance instead of replace intentionally. I'm not a radical reformer, but more of a "reform as continuous improvement" sort of guy.

A major reason why our reclaiming environment worked back in the day was that we were flexible; flexible with calendars, groupings, timetables, curriculum and all other elements of what we did... we constantly questioned what we did seeking better ways to do it. I believe that this is a paradigm that good educational leaders are following in the current system, and one that can grow in a Gladwellian fashion as the good ideas and practices tip over time with resonance.

I'm excited to explore www.allnewpubliceducation.com/solutions and applaud your efforts to think outside the box. Happy new year to you and yours as well, and let's stay in touch.
SeanSeanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17898902767993372053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574469779496191524.post-11236493773927475522010-12-31T06:10:55.334-07:002010-12-31T06:10:55.334-07:00Sean, thanks for introducing me to the concept of ...Sean, thanks for introducing me to the concept of "reclaiming environments." Though I agree that the degree to which everyone needs to be in one is a matter of perspective, isn't it true at a fundamental level that everyone responds well to feeling a part of a community of learning, rather than a lone individual in a sea being herded by bureaucrats? If so, then isn't this something worth modeling in a system to replace the one we have now?

Did your communities have to constrain themselves to school year calendars, groupings determined by age rather than capacity to learn and interests, and other irrelevant and interruptive frameworks educators labor under today?

This language is helpful in describing my vision of such a system out on www.allnewpubliceducation.com/solutions (where I would welcome your considerable experience and insights!).

Thanks for being so thought-full, Sean. I look forward to learning more from you in the coming new year!Stephen Dillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09595705712058235284noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574469779496191524.post-43658870079150654322010-07-01T10:12:40.917-06:002010-07-01T10:12:40.917-06:00Jamie and Joan, thanks for reading, and thanks eve...Jamie and Joan, thanks for reading, and thanks even more for taking the time to comment!

In your profile Joan you say that you help kids "discover their strengths and become excited about learning. Children are puzzles, all put together in their own unique designs..." and I am so happy to know yet another two educators that share this perspective with me.

As we help kids arrange themselves toward the framing of mindful, authentic and exciting learning environments, we enter a domain involving so much more than teaching. The interconnected nature of life and all of its infinite possibilities emerges and we then have a classroom unhindered by the walls that surround it.

Much gratitude to both of you...
Namaste
SeanSeanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17898902767993372053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574469779496191524.post-11381166121860145702010-07-01T09:55:10.513-06:002010-07-01T09:55:10.513-06:00Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful persp...Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful perspective.
